Goactive Football Tips On Heading The Ball
Attacking Header
With any type of header, concentration and head-eye co-ordination are extremely important.
The idea behind an attacking header is to transfer some of your power into the ball, making it go faster as it comes off your head. This isnt always possible and is a very skilled art.
The power comes from your neck and back, by keeping them straight, but not completely rigid as you strike the ball. Make sure that you get well above the ball in order to force it downwards where it is harder for goalkeepers to keep out.
Defensive Header
With any type of header, concentration and head-eye co-ordination are extremely important.
The aim of the defensive header is to clear the ball as far away as possible. So you want lots of height. Remember also where you are clearing it too, if you are clearing from your own penalty box, the edge of the box will be too dangerous so if possible aim for the touch lines.
To achieve the elevation you need to make sure that you strike the ball on your hairline, moving upwards at the same time to propel it away from you.
Diving Header
With any type of header, concentration and head-eye co-ordination are extremely important.
The diving header also requires bravery, as it can result in an injury if mistimed.
To make it you will need perfect timing, as you need to jump to meet the ball with both of your feet off the ground, and at the moment of connection be facing where you want to aim the ball and get a good clean strike. Not an easy thing to master!
Glancing Header
With any type of header, concentration and head-eye co-ordination are extremely important.
The glancing header is different to the attacking or defensive header because rather than power, you are looking for accuracy. You need to know your position and that of the target.
To make the header you will need to connect with the ball on the centre of your forehead, twisting it just before impact. The more you twist the more the angle you impart on the ball.
Head Control
With any type of header, concentration and head-eye co-ordination are extremely important.
To control the ball you need to let it hit the centre of your head. Now if you stand up straight and attempt to do this, there is a good chance you will fail, so bend your knees and your back as you connect with the ball to reduce the impact, and keep your arms out to increase stability.
